The Business of Resilience: Corporate security for the 21st century - Rachel Briggs and Charlie Edwards
This new report from the think tank Demos looks at the challenges for companies of aligning security with the business. After 12 months observing the people and practices of those companies that are considered to be leading the field, plus fieldwork in UK, USA, India and South Africa, the authors set out a new agenda outlining how companies can manage security in such a way that it is part of the daily routine of their work.
It argues that what makes the leading companies stand out is not state of the art security technologies, world-beating anti-fraud procedures or security departments full of ex 5 star generals although many have these attributes. Instead, they understand that the challenge for corporate security is no different from that of any other function they must keep pace with their company's changing business environment and ensure that how they work, what they do and how they behave reflect these realities.
The report contains a number of practical suggestions for how companies can make this happen in practice. It is available to download free of charge at http://www.demos.co.uk/catalogue/businessofresilience/ or hard copies can be ordered through the website - www.demos.co.uk

VoIP Threats
Oct. 25 marked the release of the Voice over IP Security Alliance's (VOIPSA) Security Threat Taxonomy, a list of security threats to VoIP. Among the threats identified by VOIPSA are various denial of service attacks; deceptive practices and fraud such as caller ID spoofing; and the interception or monitoring of calls.
However, there are few solid statistics to determine the frequency of such incidents. Many IT managers are cognizant of these threats, but are uncertain about what defensive approaches to take, especially when they start to extend VoIP beyond site to site.
The alliance will follow up the threat taxonomy with a set of best practices VoIP users can use to ascertain whether they have deployed the proper security measures, as well as testing suites to enable vendors to test that their products match best practices for equipment.
Members of VOIPSA include Nortel, Juniper Networks, 3Com, Symantec, Alcatel, Level 3 Communications, Accenture, and Agilent Technologies. (go to web site)
